Discussion: Why Isn't Thicke Getting the Same Backlash?

I have actually seen a fair share of people criticize him too, but he won't get as much backlash for the same reason no one cared about LMFAO basically doing the same thing and for the same reason Justin escaped the Superbowl unscathed: overt sexuality is not a problem for straight men, it is encouraged and expected.

but it bothers me that people place all the blame of this performance on miley, and i can't help but feel that part of that has to do with her being a female. there is a plethora of other reasons that influence her receiving backlash where robin has not, but it's the mentality that he is somehow less responsible than she is - which Llewellyn supported - that seems to come up frequently and i, personally, believe that she gets more of the blame because she's a female.

There's nothing more to say here.
Robin has gotten his fair share of backlash for being sexist, perverted and disgusting. He has hardly been praised for his actions, and most of the buzz surrounding BL has been negative, so trying to make the man the guilty party here is rather redundant.
It's about time for Miley to get her media lashing. Maybe then she will finally realize she looks a plum fool and that people aren't laughing with her, they are laughing at her grotesque ass.

it is the same identical mentality! for some reason overt sexuality is more of a "fault" for the women involved and more "understandable" for the man involved. it's sexism as pertaining to sexuality at its best.

ok your feelings towards the respective artists are clearly influencing your analysis of the situation.
all i'm saying is what i said in a previous post: overt sexuality is seen as understandable from a man and as shameful from a woman. we saw it with the superbowl and we're seeing it now with miley and robin.
YES, he's received backlash for blurred lines, and i'm not denying that. but that had more to do with the championing of women in the video than for the display of sexuality therein.

No it's not because he's a man (solely or even greatly).
Between the fact, the mainstream sees Robin as this player and the people who knew him before knows he performs very sensually like that all the time, he got away with it. Had it been someone like Justin Timberlake grinding on Miley, people would have called him desperate and try hard to revive his career since we all know he doesn't perform like that.

Nope, it has nothing to do with my feelings. All of you trying to act like feminist & activists are beyond annoying.
Everything has been said about Robin and his behavior, and not enough has been said about Miley's. I don't feel bad for her. My apologies.

Errrm. Although I have to admit that there was a gender element. The racial element is what ended her career. Bearring in mind, its kinda insulting to compare her to miley. Miley was acting like a damn fool throughout and their was exposure in the entire performance, unlike Janet who had a millisecond of her boobs. Anyway, to the point - Idk about your country but where I'm from Blacks are generally more strictly censored in every way. And white rockstars seem to get away with a lot visually and lyrically on daytime tv.

Don't try and make it about sexism. Thicke wasn't up there awkwardly gyrating, desperately trying to get attention while making a fool of himself, that was her. He was simply singing his song, and as a performer he looked 10x more professional and competent than she did. Miley made herself look like a clown, and now she's getting clowned.

And I don't see how this is ANYTHING like the Janet/Justin thing. Janet was not only a female, but a black female... and it definitely tainted Janet's career and legacy. This **** has build buzz for Miley's era more than anything. It doesn't even compare.

except that you talk constantly about how she's been culturally appropriating? and it's not acting like a feminist or an activist, how dare you insinuate that my argument is that shallow and devalue it in such a manner. i am a feminist - not a misandrist mind you - and i strongly believe that there is a sexist aspect to this situation. there are OTHER aspects, i've said that a million times, but to deny that sex has anything to do with it is absolutely ludicrous! i don't feel bad for her either, i am simply saying that it is unjust.

oh i completely agree with you on the racial front, and i'm from the united states which i assume you are as well based off of your last sentence? and there are definitely differences between the janet and miley situations but there are parallels as well, the latter of which is to what i was referencing.

I get the "double standard sexism" comments, but I don't really think that's it in this case.
He wasn't really "instigating" anything, just singing (barely) his song, which is already sexually charged.
Miley took it to another level (much lower, not higher), kinda ****ting it up all over the stage with her ass hanging out.
Robin just stood there while she grinded him and rubbed his crotch with her stupid foamy finger and licked his neck, so even though it was a rehearsed performance, it still appears like she was doing the most while he just let her go nuts. If it weren't for his referee tux, I might have missed him even being there, he kinda really lacks in stage presence for someone singing about all that. :/

And what does this have to do with me saying that she deserves to be getting her backlash or that Robin has had his fair share of it? Everything she does is seen as "cool," "harmless" and "fun," so yes, I'm getting a thrill at the media backlash.
Baby, I'm not responding to the rest of your essays. My opinion stands. Move along.

Miley was pretending like she was fingering her crotch and all. She deserves all the backlash she is getting. I didn't see Robin do anything wrong.

i don't think she's cool, harmless, or fun! but your feelings were clearly influencing your analysis and i was just pointing out precisely why you were wrong to state that they were not. but if you want to move along and remain ignorant have at it.

That backlash had less to do about her race and more to do with the fact janet flashed 70 million people.

So what you're saying is that me feeling that Miley's backlash is warranted is null and void because I feel a particular way about her? Or that I should be riding this feminist wave just to prove that my opinion of her isn't swaying my opinion of things? My apologies, but the backlash is warranted.

Because if you've been talking about Miley's cultural appropriation like Korean Dream said or even discussing the racial aspect of Janet being a black woman during Nipplegate, then you would be "acting like an activist." So you basically just admitted that you find yourself annoying.
