Supermodel Naomi Campbell has a #1 hit on the traditional Oricon charts, and she is the only western artist to ever have a #1 hit there. It's also legit known as a classic song.

Let's see how things play in their next era. Gaga no longer has the carry over hype from The Fame this time and but still manages to perform decently with Applause. Avril lost her steam during GL, but created some hype with her One Piece soundtracks, Rock N Roll is already charting due to only airplay that comes from Youtube version. I predict they will have similar success in Japan this era.

It's not irrelevant. Japan Hot 100 is a chart that measures western and Japanese artists fairly. Western labels ship 1/4 of the amount of physical copies to Japan, so Oricon is an unfair judgement of how popular a western song is in Japan. Japan Hot 100 allows a fair system of digital sales, airplay and ringtones. Oricon weighs physical sales higher than Airplay and Digital sales, which just blocks Western artists who don't have their singles in most stores there, so fans buy them digitally but it is weighed less there. Ringtones >>>> physical sales in Japan anyway, and Japan Hot 100 allows an equal measure of comparison between western and local artists, making it really the only unbiased chart in Japan. And it is an official Japanese chart.

^But airplay is a completely irrelevant factor in Japan. Japanese don't listen to the radio like Americans do. There's even been studies on it. That's the problem with Billboard Japan. It acts just like its American counterpart without looking at how the market over there really works and the importance of each factor. There are songs that are complete flops (example: any of Crystal Kay's recent singles) that have made top 10 on the Japan Hot 100 because their label payed for airplay but have been complete sales duds. It's basically irrelevant to what songs are actually hits with the public. That's why some songs end up looking major on the Billboard charts in Japan but don't make any sort of dent on the Oricon chart or digital chart.

Having said that I'm sure Gaga's single well sell decently when the CD is released but that doesn't make the Japan Hot 100 any more relevant. Make a thread when she has an actual hit.
