Lone Ranger bombed because no one is interested in westerns right now and Johnny Depp can't sell a movie people don't want to see.

Maleficent, on the other hand, is a universally known villain who is arguably Disney's greatest. Angelina Jolie will bring in the box office, as will the very strong supporting cast.

Disney will have zero box office flops in 2014 & 2015 (except if Pirates 5 still gets greenlit).

Maleficent won't pull a Lone Ranger. Everyone loves the character. Angelina is a perfect fit and everyone seems to agree. It's not some Western "blockbuster" (they don't work -- see Cowboys & Aliens) based on an old TV show no one remembers.
