The viewers have peaked by then, people's interest is waning, they often cut it short to roll the credits/coming next graphics and you get less social media buzz because people tune out and go about their business before bed rather than staying on Twitter/Facebook etc. talking about it whilst the airing continues.
I'd say 2nd/3rd performance is probably best. Opening is ideal, but you could get lost as the show picks up or even missed because people haven't tuned in yet. Performing in middle-ish allows for hype building ("after the break..."/"coming up...") and peak viewership.
