Except it's a PRIVATE residence, while Times Square is public area. You can bar people from entering the building you live in, especially when you're a high profile client who has been living there all your life.

When she's in public, she has her security team on hand and she's taking a risk like all celebrities do. And if she gets a restraining order on him, he'll face getting arrested just by coming within feet from her and possibly getting his son taken away. Now is that a risk he would want to take?

Things might have been different for Selena if she didn't go meet her psycho ex friend/president of her fan club by herself.
