SINGLES
Ellie Goulding knocks Miley Cyrus off the top of the Official Singles Chart to claim her first ever UK Number 1.
Congratulations to Ellie Goulding who has scored her first ever Number 1 single today with Burn! The 26-year-old singer/songwriter from Herefordshire has knocked Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop off the top of the Official Singles Chart.
Burn, which is taken from the forthcoming deluxe edition of her latest album Halcyon, and has sold an impressive 117,000 copies in the last seven days; some 40,000 copies more than the Number 2 single, Wake Me Up by Avicii.
Since winning the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award in 2010, Ellie has clocked up an impressive run of ten UK Top 40 hit singles (including Burn) and two Top 5 albums: 2010’s Lights (which peaked at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart), and last year’s Halcyon (Number 2). She also performed at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding reception in April, 2011.
Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Ellie said:
"It means the world to me to be Number 1 at the moment. It was always my dream to have a UK Number 1 single, and it's been a long time coming! Thank you to everyone who bought Burn and everyone who has supported me over the last three years."
Miley Cyrus falls two places to Number 3 with We Can’t Stop, while Lana Del Rey holds firm at Number 4 with the Cedric Gervais remix of Summertime Sadness. Lady Gaga’s new single, Applause, completes today’s Top 5 (more on Lady Gaga here).
New Entries and High Climbers
In addition to Ellie Goulding’s Burn (Number 1) and Lady Gaga’s Applause, there are three other new entries on this week’s Official Singles Chart.
Arctic Monkeys’ are new in at Number 8 with Why’d You Call Me When You’re High. The track is taken from the band’s hotly anticipated new album, AM, which is released next month.
Pop badboys The Wanted score their ninth Top 10 hit today with We Own The Night (Number 10), while London DJ and producer Ray Foxx makes his Official Singles Chart debut at Number 12 with summer anthem Boom Boom (Heartbeat) FT Rachel K Collier.
And finally, Drake’s Hold On We’re Going Home FT Majid Jordan climbs 42 places to Number 15, and OneRepublic’s Counting Stars is up 13 to Number 30.
Lady Gaga scores this week's second highest new entry with Applause, while Bad Romance finally breaks though the million copies sales barrier.
Lady Gaga’s new single Applause has gone straight into the Official Singles Chart Top 5.
The US star was forced to rush release the first single from her hotly anticipated third album, Artpop, on Tuesday afternoon (August 13), after it leaked online last weekend. Gaga declared having to issue Applause almost a week ahead of its intended release date a “pop music emergency” on her official Twitter account.
Despite going on sale two and a half days later than the rest of this week’s new singles, Applause is the second highest new entry on today’s Official Singles Chart. Up to midnight last night, it has sold over 38,000 copies, and has beaten new releases from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and The Wanted.
The added media attention surrounding Applause’s release has also helped Lady Gaga’s 2009 Number 1 hit Bad Romance finally nudge over the million copies sales barrier.
Bad Romance is just one of 138 singles to sell over a million copies in British history, and Lady Gaga is just one of 16 artists to achieve more than one million selling single (her 2009 hit, Poker Face, is also a million seller).
