You've been pretty logical for the past few 20 or so pages, and I agree primarily with what you've said.
However, numbers are numbers. XTina's fans had hope because "Your Body" literally rose to #3 on US iTunes. Had the performance planned for the day after actually happened (The Voice), it most likely would have retained it's position in the Top 10. They had a legitimate reason to have the hope they had, considering her career was dead and her last debut single peaked at #27 (?)
The second Warrior's first week numbers came out, everyone in the stan base (except YFF and to an extent, Bloo) lost entire hope of it. You don't debut with 86k and go Platinum (even Gold at this rate.) We had hope for "C'mon," yes, but after it bombed, we knew there was no going back. I think my first post in the opening week thread was "I'll be happy if this even goes gold." My point still stands.
Unless its a VERY rare case like We Found Love, songs don't just freefall then catapault up the charts. And "We Can't Stop" didn't free-fall. It went from #1 to #13 and stayed there until rising again. It didn't go from #3 to #40 in the span of 24 hours. But, being fair to my point, "Applause" isn't free-falling, but its severely underperforming.
The difference with what you brought up is that Gaga is (or was) the most successful woman in the game. She released a risky, some would say "bad", very specifically aimed at certain communities, album and still managed to sell 1.1 mil. opening week (factor out amazon and you still have 660k, and thats no number to laugh at.) She was so big that she literally could have released an audio collection of her farting into a microphone over synthesized beats with a "cool vocal intro" and it would have shot to #1 on US iTunes almost immediately.
The reason Applauses underperformance is so shocking is because her stans constantly claim she's the biggest one in the game. Her sales, her singles sales, her chart positions, her rabid amount of fans, etc. Thats what the problem here is - thats the disconnect. She has nearly 40 million followers on Twitter, one of the biggest stan bases the world has seen, more fans than Katy for sure, yet she's set to debut with 200-225k. (And the songs pretty generic [not as generic as Roar, I'll give you that], so no "It's too Avant Garde for the GP" excuses.)
Could it be a slow burner? Sure. Like you said, her promo doesn't roll out until the VMA's, Good Morning America, etc etc. Could it not connect at all? Definitely. Applause is hard to connect with to the GP because it's lyrics (especially the verses) are garbled and hard to comprehend. Had she killed the verses matched with its pretty good chorus, she'd be the one winning right now.
