Tegan and Sara at the Gibson Showroom
Tegan and Sara came by the Gibson Showroom in NYC today. They performed a special acoustic version of their single 'Youth' which featured a piano as the main focus of the song.

Afterwards, they sat down with us for a little interview, talking about the recording process of their new album, the gear they use and how their live show has evolved over the years.

Tegan: When we started out as a band, our equipment was really simple. Sara and I each just had one acoustic guitar, and that was pretty much it. We never used to see ourselves as guitar players, we were songwriters and singers, so we did not pay a lot of attention to your gear in the beginning. We never thought about all the options or possibilities there were by using different guitars, that it would really make a difference.
Sara: It was something that slowly came to us over the years, we learned a lot from the people we've worked with, the producers in the studio, especially Chris Walla and Greg Kurstin, but also the bands we've toured with. When we're on tour, we always try to watch the other bands sets to see how they do certain things, even now that we've been in the business for such a long time. There's always something to improve and that applies to our gear as well.
Tegan: Since you mentioned Chris, I remember when we first started working with him, he was the one who gave me my first Gibson guitar. We were recording The Con and I wasn't really happy with the way my guitar sounded, so he suggested I try one of the guitars he had at the studio, which was a Gibson Melody Maker. And it was just, it instantly clicked, I took that guitar into my hands and I knew something good was gonna come out of that.
Sara: It was like holding your baby for the first time.
Tegan: It really was, and that's probably why I've kept that guitar ever since. It feels like a child to me. I did add a couple of different models though, and I also discovered Joan Jett's signature model of the Melody Maker, which has a much grittier, dirtier sound than the original one, and I use that too occasionally. I actually play it on a few songs on the new record, because we were trying to go back to a more rock-ish sound again.
Sara: I think on this new album, it's probably the widest variety of gear we've used. We were really experimenting this time, trying different guitars until we found the one for each song that we thought was perfect. It was great because we worked with Chris again, and since he comes from the rock genre, he knows a lot about guitars and their sound and how to tweak it to make it sound one way or the other. He could bring in a lot of his experience and that was very helpful.
Tegan: We generally like working with producers who are very active in the studio and bring in their own ideas. We're not a band who writes demos, then goes to the studio and records the songs without changing much. We really want the producer to be engaged and contribute their own suggestions, there's always a creative discussion going on in the studio. Of course we have our ideas for every song, and sometimes we don't change a lot about them and just have the producer guide us to the sound that we want. But other times, songs get rearranged or reworked almost completely in the studio, and that's what makes it so exciting.
Sara: We really like working collaboratively. People often think that because we're twins, we have this special connection and do everything just the two of us, that we don't let anyone else in. That might have been the case when we first started out, when we didn't have anyone else but each other and we just didn't know who we could even trust. But throughout the years, that has gradually changed and we now have an amazing crew and band whose opinion we value very much. Our guitar player, Ted, he's been with us for more than ten years, and on our last two albums he also worked in the studio with us.
Tegan: The main part of the band is the live show, though, and I love how much we've evolved there since we've got the guys with us. It adds so much more to the songs when you have a full band behind you, they sound more complete and we don't depend on our stage banter as much anymore to entertain people. It's relieving to know the music play sounds good enough to satisfy people. At the same time, the band allows us to focus more on the vocals and crowd interaction, which is still very important to us because we want to create that bond with our fans.
Sara: We've also improved the visuals of our live shows a lot, we have a crazy light show now and people are really into it. It helps create the right atmosphere for our songs, you can do so much with the right lighting, I never would have expected that. The same goes for our stage set, like, our art director Emy came up with this amazing sculpted backdrop where we can project different images and stuff onto, or videos, and we can't wait to try it out on our next tour.
Tegan and Sara will be on tour with Justin Bieber for the first leg of his US tour from August 20 to August 24. They are planning on embarking on a UK/Europe tour after that as well as visiting Australia.
Their album Shipwrecked is in stores now.
You can watch the video of their acoustic performance and interview on our Youtube channel as well as gibson.com.

Tegan and Sara attend Revolution Records after party
Taking some time out of their busy schedule, Tegan and Sara attended the Revolution Records after-party tonight to celebrate Miley Cyrus's and Krewella's magazine covers.

They arrived on the red carpet looking flawless as always, flashing their happiest smiles as they told MTV their new album is projected to debut within the top 3 at the end of the week.
We're overwhelmed with the reception of the album so far, so many people have given us a positive reaction, friends, family, fans, critics, we couldn't be happier. We've been working really hard the past year to create this record and seeing people connect with it is the best feeling ever, Sara told us with genuine excitement.
Their single 'Youth' has also been doing well, comfortable sitting at #4 in the single charts for a second consecutive week. It's great, people are really supporting the song and that was a big relief for us. It was our comeback song after all, and we are thankful that it was received so well, the video, too, Tegan said. Nevertheless, the band already has plans for a second single. We still haven't decided for sure what song it's going to be, we also want to wait for some reactions when people have heard the album, but we're gonna put it out there soon. It's gonna be good!
And with that, the duo disappeared into the party crowd to enjoy the night.

Later, Tegan took the DJ stand to play an exclusive DJ set for the dancing masses, proving once again that she knows exactly how to get the people going.
Throwing together typical dance songs and more unusual remixes, she created an eclectic set that catered to every music taste in the room. She also included host Krewella's latest single Never Wake Up, which had the whole room bouncing. Here's a part of her impressive playlist:
DJ Antoine Ma Chιrie
Metric Gold Guns Girls (Draper Remix)
M83 Midnight City
Tegan and Sara Youth (Walla Remix)
David Guetta ft Rihanna Who's That Chick?
Kanye West Stronger
Yeah Yeah Yeahs Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)
Skrillex Bangarang
Icona Pop I Love It
M.I.A. Bring The Noize
Tiesto ft Tegan and Sara Feel It In My Bones
Cansei De Ser Sexy Music Is My Hot Hot Sex (KILL THE NOISE Remix)
TeeTee spun some records for us for about an hour, but we really wished she would have stayed longer because her set was pure FIRE. We're hoping this DJ act becomes a regular side project of hers, because we'd also love to see her do some remixes herself.

MILEY CYRUS PERFORMS NEW DEMI LOVATO DISS TRACK AT AFTER-PARTY
Miley is planned to perform on Conan tonight, so she was going to save her voice until later, but a last minute change was made. She took to the stage at her party after Tegan of Tegan & Sara did a DJ Setlist.
"Thanks everyone for coming and thanks Tegan for that sick playlist! So now, a lot of you have probably seen me and this little c*nt on Twitter fight. Apparently her name is Demitria Lovato... but of course I like to call her DEMOtria Lovato just because it's funnier. So apparently she said she was going to crash this afterparty... which I think is a bitch move because I wouldn't do that to her in a million eras. But you know what, I actually hope she's here tonight. LISTEN DEMO AND LISTEN GOOD. Drop a beat!"
Miley Cyrus announced that this track was a diss called "Oh Demo!" and she began to sing/rap:
"Everytime I see her, in the photos -
I think: Girl got nothing but flops and demos -
She wants to party in the back -
With the business in the front -
Look bitch, listen -
'Cuz your career is done...
Singing on that 80k -
Messy promo every week -
She keeps on going little mess -
Releasing singles every week -
She gives them money at the corner -
Just for a good time -
But when her writers saw the **** -
They were like: Bitch bye!
*Sung*
And it's not my fault,
that you are a mess -
She can't even get one,
bit generous tip -
Twitter fueds,
and borderline -
She is,
on the edge -
Oh Demo!
What will you do,
next?
Oh Demo!
What will you do,
next?
Oh Demo!
Who will you front,
next?"
That was just a tiny snippet of her little shady performance. However, we have not heard anything from Demi on this yet, and it was not confirmed she arrived at they party by the time Miley got on stage. A clip was posted on Instagram of this performance generating over 6.000 likes and 2.700 comments in just minutes after it made the Popular Page. Looks like Demi will have another meltdown!

SHAKIRA PERFORMS AT RELEVANT AWARD SHOW
Shakira was announced to perform at ______ 2013 Award Show earlier this week and as predicted she did not disappoint. Giving a light rock performance of her power ballad and new single, Truths, the singer showed all the acts prior how it was done. Serving amazing vocals while in very goth-rock-vamp attire (along with a wind machine), the singer gave possibly her best performance of the song. The song leaped up iTunes after, possibly giving the single a new peak after it debuted at #3. Shakira will release her debut album August 20th.
SHAKIRA PERFORMS ON JAY LENO
Shakira stopped by Jay Leno this week to give us a performance of her latest single which seems to be a success having charted in the top three earlier this week. The superstar topping google searches and iTunes in numerous countries, the singer filmed an amazing performance that aired today. Usually most artists signing in the studio, there was such demand that Shakira had to do an outside gig which of course was jammed packed.Singing her single in it's original arrangement, everything seemed to be perfect. A big note at the end gave the sultry performance a big finish as the audience cheered in approval.
