They're releasing the lead single and album on the exact same weeks Taylor released WANEGBT and Red. I don't think it's coincidence either. She has a flawless release schedule that she's used to enormous success many times now.
Everyone hated Bad Romance at first. It was too dark. Everyone wanted LoveGame Gaga back. The song fell down iTunes rapidly. I strongly remember the meltdowns. It was a 15 minutes of fame mess Then the video was released and the rest is history.
But let us not put too much stock into the video Applause. It could very well suck and cause the song to plummet even faster.
Good for Katy I am not surprised. I am not surprised by Gaga's numbers either. Not the record breaking numbers the people who claimed Gaga was over were expecting, but still OK.
Applause isn't much of a grower. It's a cheap, camp, pop song that's designed to be instantaneous. If you don't like it after a few listens then chances are you won't.
Wow Gaga. They'll probably both lift when people check in for the weekend.
When Billboard/HDD issues projections, they already account for promotion that artist has incoming for that sales week as well as weekends, holidays and any other predictable sales boost the song may see.
I don't think streaming will help much. A lot of those views are likely outside the US and stan views. Neither of which are counted towards the Hot 100.
Some people are too anxious to see a failure. Anything could happen at this point.
All jokes aside, this is so true. I seriously believe (call me crazy) that Applause will rise and end up being a pretty decent sized hit. (or at least not an all-out flop)
But "Bad Romance" was actually a good song...and also "Bad Romance" was released when she was still a relatively new artist. Given the "massive" fan-base she has accumulated since then and coming off a two year gap - the initial demand for her music should have been much more than 220K.
Plus, Paparazzi was still a big hit when Bad Romance was released.

It'll be tough, but if Gaga is selling 200-225k, then Blurred lines probably will too (if not less). Unless Billboard is predicting Applause to free fall this weekend.
