I am totally shocked at this, and even moreso because it's not a bad song It's really catchy, awesome melody, it's very danceable and FUN, what her fans wanted. The lyrics are a mess but that didn't stop Born This Way, she should comfortably sell over 400k. The drop in other territories is also bad, with "Born This Way" she FLEW to #1 with a massive lead everywhere.

I also think the fact that she never completed her North American tour really hurt her.
The same people that listen to Top 40 radio are the ones using iTunes and streaming off Spotify (two areas where Miley is slaying). Maybe it is the lyrics but there has been SO much worse so it really makes no sense.
Lol radio is too busy spinning irrelevant songs (from #11 to #20 on iTunes) that NO ONE cares about.

Who can relate to Applause other than her fanbase though? First singles are designed to appeal to the biggest audience possible. This one is destined for Little Monsters. The casual buyer isn't interested in her hip injury or how she feels about her critics.
Born This Way had the equality flag, which was huge at the time of release, not to mention she was coming off one of the biggest eras in Pop ever.
The production is fun and works for radio, but the themes and lyrics are a mess.
