I highly doubt "ROAR" is a representation of what the entire album will be. Just like "California Girls" didn't represent the entire Teenage Dream album.
Katy made a smart step to go away from the sound of her previous era and pick something that'll stand out on radio. The teasers were about shedding her old image. Not everything needs to be pretentious for it to be a departure and/or show 'maturity' in ones work.
Even if she did a complete 180 sound-wise some people would still be like: "LMAO what a try-hard etc. etc.

Thank god Katy isn't pretentious so she won't release some messy "artistic" flops!
ROAR is a great POP song, it's different from her previous singles, it's fun, it serves some great vocals, it has something Anthemic in it and I love its lyrics!
I am currently a bit underwhelmed. However, I've only heard the song once. I think it's a grower and will sound great driving down the road with my windows down.
