Wasn't this album or single supposed to be 'dark' and 'edgy' or is that just me being misinformed?
It's a song that many people will be able to relate to and the beat is quite infectious. That being said, I feel as if it lacks something. It's too cute and childish and definitely not living up to the standards of a lead single. Katy has done way better.
I highly doubt "ROAR" is a representation of what the entire album will be. Just like "California Girls" didn't represent the entire Teenage Dream album.
Katy made a smart step to go away from the sound of her previous era and pick something that'll stand out on radio. The teasers were about shedding her old image. Not everything needs to be pretentious for it to be a departure and/or show 'maturity' in ones work.
Since when do songs have to have some type of intellect or impact attached to them? Sure, it's kinda relatively weak in the verses, but she knows how to make a hit and cater to the GP.
The fact that it will be a hit has nothing to do with it's quality and the fact that she can make a hit and "cater to the GP" isn't something to be lauded from an artistic standpoint, but from a commercial one.
