Not so much the album sonically, but in terms of imagery and the sexuality of women in pop, it was an important and abrasive statement that was almost unheard of at the time. Especially considering that Madonna was massive at that point and pretty much took a nose dive to rock bottom.
a shame because Erotica is so much better than either of those albums

You wouldn't be able to mention 3 song titles from that album without going to Wiki...
and the title track is the only semi enjoyable song on the album.
Why the girls act like Erotica was a memorable era? A bunch of flopped singles, an album that was shipped back and a forgotten sex book. I love how girls cling to forgotten, flopped eras just to seem cultured.
