Even more controversial...why not put the current board & database on a private subdomain for archiving? This way, the admins can migrate old threads over to the new vB5 at their leisure.
I get the idea of keeping old threads, but a board of ATRL's size needs to prune threads. I suggested a months ago that ATRL make a Hall of Fame area, where only the best, "legendary" threads are housed. Obviously members could suggest threads to be included but ultimately the staff would decide. This could alleviate a lot of problems w/ stress on the server.
Places like the charts could have a weekly prediction thread for discussion and whatnot. Then, at the end of the week, the final numbers are tallied and put into a one post-thread with the information and a link to discussion for that thread. At the end of the year or so, the discussion threads could be deleted, keeping the chart archives in tact and free of clutter.

As I understand it the number of posts in the database is not an issue. That's not what is slowing us down. We just have too much traffic.
The server we have should in theory be able to handle it, but due to our buggy vB we run into problems.
Upgrading the forum software is easier said than done because the look and feel of the forum has to be built from scratch, and there are many other things that must be implemented correctly before we can move.
I
think that for the short term we are now looking at a hardware upgrade after all, since it will be needed anyway when ATRL starts growing again. Hope the admins can enlighten us soon.
