It's not that impressive when you note that they suppressed sales until it was extremely high on radio already, which caused the #1 debut due to the Hot 100 rules of the day.

And I'll have you know that there 4 songs debuted at #1 that year within a 4 month period...think about it
What if "Applause" sucks? I think people need to lower their expectations. I know Gaga has a big fanbase, but still, let's wait for the song to judge.

She didn't sell 509K in three days. She sold 448K in three days. She sold 509K in its first full week of release, plus after that high profile Grammy performance.
The hype isn't exactly the same, is it? That kind of "event" release doesn't come by default.
BTW had the benefit of anybody who had ever purchased any Lady Gaga song being e-mailed about her new single as soon as it was up. I'm not sure if they'll employ the same "tactic" with Applause tho, but if they do we'll see bigger numbers than before because it'll have a full week of sales.
