Britney had a previous Greatest Hits: My Prerogative out. The Singles Collection was designated for the obvious reasons. Also, it probably depends on the contract, but rarely is a GH actually counted as a studio album (five studio albums before a contract expires for an example).

Yes, My Prerogative is exactly what I'm talking about. She released it after 4 albums and just included all her singles so far on it. The Britney era singles were huge flops but all made the tracklist.

Oh, I was under the impression that they still count towards album contracts because Girls Aloud used a Greatest Hits and then a complete album collection shortly after that to fulfill their contract requirements

It's mostly the label's discretion. Take KC for example, she released her GH back in November and had it been deemed as a studio album, she would've been let out of her contract. But RCA chose not to. Same with the Xmas album she's releasing this year too.

Let me just say something about this GH everyone is talking about.

Peak on charts and sales are not the only things to define if a song is a hit or flop. Impact and critical acclaim need to be taken into account too.

Most of Britney singles flopped in the USA, but they smashed in other countries and at least Some of Those singles make impacts and are memorable/iconic even if they peaked low on charts. Most of 1D singles flopped and didn't make any impact and are not even memorable/iconic. So 1D shouldnt release a GH album.

I mean even someone like Rihanna who has countless WW hits doesn't even release a damn GH album after 7 albums released because most of her singles didn't make any impact.
