I just learned the first Africans weren't bought here as slaves, but as Indentured service along with whites from England. Once they served their time they would be set free and then open up their own businesses thus competing with whites. They didn't too much like that too much and that's when they started bringing Africans over here and making them slaves for life.
There was also a short period after slavery ended that black people were prospering. Again once blacks started competing with the white businesses and they didn't like that; that's when they started implementing Jim Crow laws.
It's basically part of American history to keep black people from succeeding.
