Lana Del Rey Set to Sing at Cannes Opening Night

It’s going to be quite the opening night for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. I can tell you that Lana del Rey is here to sing “Young and Beautiful,” her hit song from “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack. She will be part of a big presentation with French actress Audrey Tatou, as well as a mini tribute to Steven Spielberg and the presentation of his jury including Nicole Kidman, Ang Lee, and Christoph Waltz.


At the afternoon press conference for the jury, Ang Lee– who won the Oscar in February for Best Director–said of head juror Spielberg: “I worship him. He’s my hero.” It was heartfelt. Spielberg blushed. “I worship ‘Life of Pi’,” he said. “So I worship Ang Lee.”

Nicole Kidman said she did not get any advice from hubby Keith Urban about being a judge– he’s finishing a rocky year as a jurist on “American Idol.” Kidman did say Urban would be joining her here as soon as “Idol” is over. He sorely needs a vacation, that’s for sure.

Waltz likened negotiating with the other jurors to a type of psychotherapy, and mentioned the name of Freud. Waltz, whose international career began here with “Inglourious Basterds” just three years ago, said he still can’t believe he’s a juror.

“Coming up the stairs today I forgot what I was doing here,” he laughed.

So glad American is waking up to some of my own favorite tracks from Lana. "Summertime Sadness" is my 3rd favorite song from her ("Ride" and "Young and Beautiful" both pushing forward after their releases), so it makes me happy to see it is doing the best. These have all been stable in similar positions for days, btw.

I think they have festival coverage on TV there, but not sure if all of the event is televised. Would be excellent, the song would instantly rise in France.

Its European release starts today, we should start witnessing movements worldwide for the song over the next couple nights.

With no airplay if it can keep within the top 10 on iTunes once it's released to radio, it could hopefully go in the top 40 on the Hot 100.

Lana Del Rey: The ascent continues apace

As she begins a UK tour, with one of 2012's bestselling albums behind her, Lana Del Rey is also thriving on the new Great Gatsby soundtrack, says Bernadette McNulty......

......For his new Great Gatsby, Luhrmann has outsourced the curation of the sound-track to hip hop mogul Jay-Z. The result is a tonally consistent, glossily r&b musical backdrop. Someone on another board said it sounded like a minor-key version of a song from that era and they're so right. You put this in a major key and it sounds just like it came from that era. Amazing.
