It would have had the same exact outcome IMO.
The general public does not really want to read into things or try to discover the underlying message of songs or music videos.
The only reason Starships was "controversial" was people tried to place limits on what a (female) rapper can and cannot do. I find it funny that was a problem because shortly after Azealia, Iggy, and even Cher Lloyd rose in popularity with their hybrids of rap and different genres. I don't think Nicki necessarily opened doors for those three in that sense, but I think she took enough backlash from the general public for other rappers (male and female) to realize that you have to watch how experimental you are with pop.
IMO, Summer Jam could have been really bad. Yes, Nicki had two legends with her, Lauryn and Foxy, but I honestly don't think it could have helped her or the era at all. The general public would have forgotten about it quickly or Lauryn Hill returning would have overshadowed Nicki and I feel like Lauryn Hill stans would disapprove of Nicki being beside Lauryn during her part (kind of like how Nicki was the hypeman for Foxy at the Pepsi Concert). Her free Pepsi concert was probably better than the Summer Jam performance would have been as well because she had more artists to appear and had full control of it.
