My problem with this era is the Kennedy's. I mean, it's clear that they're responsible for her bad press.
Anywho, RED > Speak Now for many reasons.

1) Greater Tour
2) Explores different areas in production, matters, and melodies.
3) Speak Now's songs were direct and to the point, whereas RED's songs are all chaotic and sporadic, all over the place, they have different meanings behind them, yet the subject of the song is still gathered at one road. The songs are dark and twisted, but magical and, frankly, red.

Is Red discounted? Why is it picking up in album charts? Currently no. 22 in US and UK

Speak Now is just a masterpiece of an album. Lyrically and production wise it just blows RED and Fearless out of the water, it couldve been the perfect era.
It was majorly a country album, but not selling out to mainstream country by singing songs like Speakers go boom boom.
It had pop appeal without watering down and dumbing down her music
IMO this album is where she was mostly herself besides her first of course. The fact that she wrote it all solo just dont lie.

I mean, how can lyrical geniuses like Enchanted, Last kiss, dear john, innocent, long live and Never grow up all be on the same album.
And Mine, sparks fly, better than revenge, haunted, mean, etc.

That's because she is holding back and all of us older fans know it. She is afraid of including too many mature details in her songs because she doesn't want to alienate any young fans. Kind of like that Vogue quote where it talked about her fans not being ready for her to grow up quite yet. I feel like her management has drilled that into her and society as a whole that she has to be some babysitter. If she was given freedom to do whatever the album would be different. I also think there may be personal things holding her back too. I think she has become used to the role she has assumed and appealing to the kiddies is sort of a comforting blanket. Hopefully over time she will become confident enough to do whatever she wants. I like to think of this album as her big learning/breaking point album. I think it is what she needed in order to truly see the big picture. During Speak Now, she was too busy being poisoned by Borshetta. Now she can see the lies and hopefully learn from them.

I don't think that it was a majorly country album. I feel that it had country influences on all of the songs and that is what makes Taylor unique. The ability to apply genres to other genres in order to make the sound she feels best suits the emotion she wants to convey within the song. I feel like we also see it on her best songs on Red. The feeling of being on a cloud while singing State of Grace. That song sounds like hope. Or on the Last Time the feeling of dragging through a relationship and it slowly wearing down on you; you can feel that through the song. Honestly as cliche as it sounds Taylor has really created her own genre and that is what makes her so unique and why she is a true rockstar.

That's pretty much the main problem. She doesn't need to babysit. Her fans HAVE grown up with Her. practically the kids from LP1 era are in their late teens or early twenties as well. Why keep trying to appeal to the kids? Can't She stick to what She already have? Greedy.

And a half-assed album is just so NOT Her, isn't it? Like, this is so lame.

Realise this and learn pls. Before it's too late. And I see Her brand is already 'overworked'.

One of the many factors that draws me to Taylor's music. I am always impressed with the moods she tries to set for the subject matter of her song. Enchanted and Last Kiss are prime examples.

Even in Begin Again, the feeling of optimism just washes over you as the guitar strings open up for the Accordion to set that mood.

Yeah my biggest problem with the pop songs are that the they homogenize her and steal away her unique sound. I love some of the lyrics to 22 and I know why a lot of critics love it. It isn't Taylor though and if she keeps making songs like that she will lose who she is. I'm really excited about her buying that house. It really gives me hope for her going off the radar and creating the album she always wanted. She is capable of so much and this image holds her back. Being away from fame for awhile in that house will hopefully get her back in touch with the real world. I'm really excited for the next album. I feel like it will be pretty definitive for her. I'm glad 22 is flopping and I hope EHC is moderate so she can see that she can rely on her own talent.

I think she has specified many times that RED was just an experimental album; the polar opposite of Speak Now.

Don't forget Her ability to put a twist in Her songs. And the tenses shifts. And the brilliant bridges. She can pull it effortlessly. Literally not many ppl are operating at Her level.

She only lacks in theme diversity, which can be overlooked with the quality of the songs She has.

The last bridge is flawless. I can't even count how many times I've replayed that part of the song. Such a perfectly seductive song and one of the tracks on Red that really give me a taste of Taylor without boundaries and hope for the next album.
