When I had Pearl, I never picked Piplup. WORST DECISION EVER. I never knew what a flawless Starter Empoleon was until recently.

This, tbh. The only Gen. V legendaries I used were Virizion (I chose the water type as my starter and no other grass-type could fulfill my needs ), and the two dragon-types depending on what version you chose. There were just too many [useless] legendaries in that gen. Oh yeah, Latios on occasion...

Besides the Hoenn starters and Piplup, I always ditch my starters. I never did it when I was younger though, they were like the only Pokémon I trained back then

Charmander
Chikorita
Midkup
Piplup
Oshawott
And i think i will choose the water again in the new game
The water starters are always flawless

that's where I draw the line though, I will definitely box my starter if it becomes useless (and then of course I'll go back for it later when I can use it again).

Luckily though, I have always been choosing waters in every game I had, and it turns out having water starters are pretty useful all the time so far

I personally like to keep a Gengar with this moveset on most of my OU teams :

Focus Sash item, Destiny Bond, Shadow Ball, Psychic, and Sludge Bomb
