This.
The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is good for what it was, but has not aged well, and the last 20 minutes of pure screaming and ridiculousness is unbearable after the first time or two. I would go so far as to say it is quite overrated, but there are creepy moments that are still really effective. Unfortunately those are mostly in the first half of the movie.
The 2003 remake is fantastic though and no one will tell me otherwise. It kept the intensity and creepiness of the first film with a more cohesive nature and overall is just a great, tense movie. A lot of the negative reviews came from people who deemed it as "too gory" and "disgusting", which is complete ******** because those are the same people that praised movies like "The Devil's Rejects", so I take Rotten Tomateos with a grain of salt in this case. As far as the string of horror remakes went for a wihle, TCM, The Hills Have Eyes & Last House on the Left benefited the most from being remade, as I felt they were stories that were able to be told much better with modern techniques and more cohesion. The Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th remakes were not good. Particularly NOES, which was just unbelievably stupid and a waste of a great opportunity.
And IMO, critical amalgamation =/= quality of a horror film for horror fans and that's just a given. Particularly because critics tend to dislike genre films from the get-go (especially slashers and gory films). Rotten Tomatoes really has no business ever coming up in this thread, TBH, unless we're talking about more drama- or suspense-leaning "horror" films that are obviously made for more mass appeal and not necessarily for genre nuts.
The most recent Texas Chainsaw that has Trey Songz in it is garbage. It was just stupid, and not in an enjoyable way. TC2, Leatherface and the Next Generation are worth a download, but generally are just not great movies (although part 2 has a huge cult following, prob because it's just ridiculous). The Beginning was actually a really nice companion to the 2003 version.
V/H/S was overrated, although a few of the shorts as standalones are not bad. Basically every male character in it was such an obnoxious douchebag that it was almost unwatchable at points. There were def some creepy moments though. Early reviews of V/H/S/2 though have said that it is much better than the first, so I have a bit of hope. For what it's worth, V/H/S is much better than "The ABC's of Death", which is just a ****ing waste of a horror vignettes idea, as most of the shorts are unbelievably stupid or look cheap as ****.
On the topic of horror mockumentaries, y'all should download "The Poughkeepsie Tapes". The intercut fake "interviews" are a bit silly, but overall the found footage stuff is so, so creepy. Bummer that it never made it to theaters. With some editing, could have scared the **** out of people. Also, "The Last Broadcast" is definitely worth a watch, as it basically is Blair Witch before Blair Witch existed.
Super excited for You're Next, Carrie (glad it's going to be more in line with the book), Insidious 2 and The Purge. Also, so glad they're going forward with Sinister 2. I need Bagul to come back and slay some more.
