They barely do anything these days and they're pitted against the current pop girls. They're in the Top 10 Billboard chart as you're reading this. They're big 10 years later and barely lifting a finger.
I know most of us here are too young to remember what was going on 10+ years ago, but they were enormously popular.
The only people I remember being bigger in the short span of my existence was the Spice Girls .
But Christina/Britney? Every interview - every conference - every panel during their debut, "How many boyfriends have you had? Are you a virgin? How far have you gone? How many sexual partners have you had? How will you lose your virginity?". Everyone was obsessed with every single part of their existence and felt like they could participate in it. Parents would watch these things like hawks, scandalized left and right over what today we would consider nothing. Hell, there were organized protests over Eminem's records. We watched them grow up on the regular news, sadly. The average kid doesn't want to "BE" Gaga. You want to BE Britney. Britney/Xtina were very interlaced in mainstream culture, they practically defined it at their peak. People dressed like them, did their makeup like them, created social groups around them. It was a huge deal. People don't do this for Gaga/Rihanna. It was way beyond sales. They pretty much paved the way for the next generation (as the generation before them paved the way for them)
Gaga almost comes close to the overexposure but she, overall, is an interesting person that naturally draws attention. Her personal life is exceptionally boring for the random viewer though, she doesn't get that much exposure in that regard, her talent/eccentrics are more newsworthy. She has respect and control. Rihanna surprisingly didn't shatter the world with her transition to the dark side (granted - everyone kind of expected it because a) right of passage to 21, b) it was time almost appropriate after Chris Brown). She's closer to being like Britney/Christina, but still not the same. Not enough for everyone to freak out and watch Battleship when ti came out (which was much more respectable than Crossroads). She's a certified hit maker. But just not so interesting. And they're still riding off the peak of their careers...
It was just a different time. Memorabilia was in most major stores. That doesn't happen as much anymore. The Internet changed things, there are other ways to get memorabilia/gossip fixes than watching entertainment news.
And no one start to compare sales - its 10 years later and inflation is a thing.
Guinness says BOMT has shipped 30 million too. And monsters always use Guinness as a receipt for Gaga's relevance "Most Famous Person 2012" so just use that to shut them up
The Lord should write some ballads for Britney her new album. We all know how much of a stan The Lord is. It would work since their vocal registers are similar
"Ok, ok ok ok, so listen, listen so then he goes, no matter what I do
for you it never seems to be enough... ioww! I can't believe he said that. You
don't think I'm like that do you?"
"Well, you are..."
"What?! don't tell me you agree with him. Oh my god, oh my god!"
"Well, I mean everything was fine next it's your freaking out,
it's like you never satisfied"
"Well I know I'm a little pikky... but hey, I just know what I want!"

"Hey, what's up this is Brit
And I'm not in right now,
So do your thang!
Beep! hehehe, I'm just kiddin'"
"Hehehe, yo Brit
You're a nerd, you really need to change that message.
Look, I was thinking about that movie we saw the other night.
You know, how she had all that fame, and all that money,
And she still wasn't happy.
Wouldn't that make a cool song?"
"So Nana, what you guys do in your date last night?"
"Oh, he was so sweet, he took me to eat, he bought me roses
And we were back to his house and watched movies."
"You were back to his house?! do you guys kiss?"
"I can't tellin' you that..."
"Oh my God you did!
Shh! oh my God, look at that boy, he's so cute and he's lookin' over here,
Be quiet! Be quiet!"
"Go talk to him..."
"No! I'm too nervous ..."
