You and I did not smash And what makes you say that about Edge of Glory? It wasn't even a smash in its original dance-pop form
2x Platinum in the US is great for a 4th album single, especially since its success was almost based entirely on its digital sales, it did not receive great support on radio.
And TEOG sold 5 million WW and will likely eventually go 3x Platinum in the US.
The real question is: can the ballad era survive gaga?
Gaga will bring dance/electronic dance music back...again
Actually let me save this. By all of the haters posting in this thread not contesting that the dance pop era is over, they basically concede that it IS over and the ballad era has begun. So when Gaga brings back dance pop once more they can't play the card "Well dance pop never died" or "It was already popular"
not receiving great support on the radio means it didnt smash.
Diamonds got almost 200M AI on Radio, went #1 for three weeks, got 200M+ YT views and only sold marginally better than You & I. Similar story for Wide Awake.
I'm not claiming You & I smashed, but it did very well for the type of song it was.

And that is what you call "selling power" ladies and gents!
Just because some ballads have managed to do well in the sphere of pop music, I highly doubt that means we're entering an era in which ballads are the dominant pop song genre.
Even then, Gaga's 'ballads' have always been more interesting. Very much in line with her glam-rock branding, even her softest moments have a lot more kick than most of the weepy maudlin piano songs we've come to associate with pop balladry.
What do you know? The godfather of glam rock and one of his most popular piano ballads strongly disagree. Piano ballads work really well in terms of rock. You just need to know how to write them.
yes, I mean she released You and I a rock ballad (more risky than a piano ballad) with personal lyrics when PRA and GME were everywhere, and the song was top 10 and has sold more than a lot of hits with much less airplay like WHYB, or others number one songs...
Are you posting this as an example of a good ballad?? This tuneless and unknown song is truly dreadful. It's all stunts and costumery - a man wearing heavy makeup, creepy contacts and a crazy wig and suit overshadowing the (middling) music.
Why is Gaga singled out here? If this "ballad era" does exist shouldn't all the pop girls be worried? Unless you think Rihanna, Bruno, pink, taylor and Kesha aren't going to do any more singles from their albums(since non-ballads are about the only potential singles left) and Beyonce, Katy, JT, and Britney won't release uptempo singles.

I think the other poster's point was not that Gaga's ballads are the best or unique, but rather that they are different from what the general public typically thinks of as balladry - that being a sow song like, to use today's examples, "Someone Like You" or "Stay". You don't need to be so condescending ("What do you know?") all the time, you know - we get it, your fave heavily influenced ours and ours is not the first to do a glam rock track by any means. What the other person said was barely even objectionable, though, and certainly wasn't something that wouldbe incorrect seeing as the general public doesn't typically think of David Bowie when they think of ballads. Actually, I'm confused as to what your point even was.

This ballads era stuff is nonsense anyway.
Queen of Pop Rihanna has plenty of ballads left (Loveeeeeee Song, What Now, Get It Over With, Half of Me, etc.). Bruno definitely has Moonshine as well.
Lady Gaga could easily do ballads too though. Speechless, Yoü and I, and Brown Eyes were all great.
