And Aaliyah was already flopping before her death. Aaliyah the alberm only sold 187,000 first week. The album was plummetting down the charts and only sold 447,000 copies before her death. It wouldn't have even reached Platinum if Aaliyah hadn't died.
We Need a Resolution flopped to the pits of hell. More Than a Woman and Rock the Boat both only did well because of Aaliyah's death, and even then both failed to reach the top ten.

How is this album basic r & b when it fuses multiple genres?
OIAM helped shape the sound of late 90's r & b, a sound that even YOUR fave had cloned.
And she wasn't flopping. The album gave her the biggest first week sales of her career and was already GOLD within just a month of the album being out. The album was already jumping up the charts when RTB was gaining radio spins without it even being a single.
Aaliyah's first two albums PEAKED @ the bottom of billboard and still went on to sell millions of copies, so why Wouldn;t Aaliyah be able to do the same, when it was already her fastest selling album?
You girls stay rambling with no facts.

The week before her death, the album only sold 36,000 copies. Only a month after its release.
The reason her other albums sold well is because she had hits from both of them. She had no hits prior to her death from the self-titled album. Rock the Boat didn't chart until September, WEEKS after Aaliyah's death. Without her death, the album would've flopped.

Aaliyah has always been a slow seller, simpleton.
Aaliyah's first two albums PEAKED @ THE BOTTOM OF BILLBOARD, AND STILL WENT ON TO MULTI PLATINUM STATUS.
AALIYAH'S LAST ALBUM PEAKED IN THE TOP 5 OF BILLBOARD AND WENT GOLD WITH JUST ONE SINGLE
I mean, what is there not to comprehend?

and get those facts together boo. Monica was never slaying ****. Aaliyah outsold her, had a bigger following WW, had more endorsments, and movie deals that Monica never seen in her career.
And Aaliyah is known outside of the urban community. She's not hugely known, but she's known.
Aaliyah DID only live to see 22, you know. Y'all act like Aaliyah actually had the chance to have her career blossom. She was just really getting started.
the fact that she's been dead for 11 years yet we still discuss her for PAGES on end on this forum further proves her worth.
|
You act like Clive Davis made the whole Grammy committe choose Alicia Keys to win her awards. If that was true, then Whitney Houston would of won more than six grammys. Alicia music was succussful because her music was great R&B music. A lot of people can relate to Alicia's music. Alicia Keys made a bigger impact than Aaliyah. Aaliyah death was her only impact and that maybe why a small amount of people outside of the Urban community would know who she is but I bet a huge half of people outside of the Urban community don't know her music. Plus Alicia was more talented than her.

A Gold certification in 2001 is a flop. Especially for a "major" artist like Aaliyah.
And her album was clearly on track to flop. People had no reason to buy her album prior to her death.

.......... You act like Aaliyah put out 5 singles, toured for a year,, and only went Gold.
She only put out ONE VIDEO, and the album was only out for a MONTH while she was alive. And within that ONE MONTH, it was already Gold. You sound a fool.

She's friends with Clive. Clive is part of the grammy commitee. She had the pull. End of.
And Whitney won less grammies because Whitney (And Aaliyah) was in an era where competition in r & b was more fierce. Alicia only has to compete with Just Beyonce for grammies in r & b now, since R & B isn't really a marketable genre of music anymore.
If Alicia died @ 22, she wouldn't have any bigger impact than anybody. And that's just the truth.
You can't compare someone's legacy to someone who had a short career span like Aaliyah, to artists who actually lived to make a name for themselves.
And her only impact? If it wasn't for her, who knows where Missy and Timbaland would be right now
And more talented? Alicia is a better musician, but performing, dancing, and singing, Aaliyah wins.

Alicia won her awards fair and square boo. It shouldn't matter if Whitney had competition since you think Clive Davis owe the Grammy committe right? Like I say before, if that was true, Whitney Houston should won more than six Grammys.
And if Alicia Keys would of died @ 22, Alicia would still made a bigger impact than Aaliyah. Alicia Keys debut itself made a big impact with the classic first single Fallin off of her classic debut album "Songs In A Minor."
And Alicia is a better vocalist than Aaliyah. Alicia is way more talented than Aaliyah. The only thing Aaliyah got on Alicia is dancing.

Again, there is NO COMPETITION IN R & B. No compeition + Friends in the commitee= Easy wins.
And if Alicia died @ 22, She would be known for that one ass hit and album (one hit/album wonder), while Aaliyah had several at 22. She wouldn't have had a legacy bigger than Aaliyahs. You are being delusional. Alicia's legacy is bigger because she lived pass the age of 22 and her career lasted more than 7 years, while Aaliyah's didn't.
Alicias teqnique is terrible and her tone is even worse. Alicia is better at instruments and songwriting, but live performing, singing, and dancing, Aaliyah wins.

Anyway, I agree with these three.
I wish my fave had a discography more like Aaliyah's and Janet's because then people wouldn't try her for having 'sup-bar' material. Beyonce's impact is undeniable though.

So quick to discredit Li but your faves BEEN a fan. Like....
Aaliyah may not be known in the overall world of music but to discredit her influence in the urban industry is foolish and you'll get booked with reciepts.

Stevie can't take notice of Aaliyah because he's blind.
And what does that have to do with Aaliyah's minuscule legacy? Let's discuss some facts:
- 1. Aaliyah's work is not widely revered by the top critics (Rolling Stone, Q Magazine, Pitchfork, NPR, etc).
2. Aaliyah's untimely death was an opportunity to overrate her time on Earth.
3. Aaliyah is NOT regarded as one of the top artists of her time by anyone other than her fans from August 25, 2001 - present or anti-Beyonce fans.
4. There are very few artists besides Drake and Ciara who have named Aaliyah as a music inspiration.
5. Aaliyah's work is NOT widely named as a source of artistic inspiration.
If you feel that any of the aforementioned points is fallacious or untrue, I challenge you to prove me wrong.

Janet's Impact>>>>>>
Sure Whitney and Mariah had more success music wise, but overall Janet slayed.
Janet changed the playing field for what it was to be a female pop superstar.
You not only had to be able to sing, you had to also be able to sing, DANCE, PERFORM, ACT, and at times sell sex.
Other than singing, Mariah and Whitney fell immensely flat. Sure they've inspired many young girls and boys around the world to sing because of their voices but in terms of pop today Janet had much more musical and performance prominence. Every pop girl that comes out today is expected to do much more than get in front of a mic and sing, they have to be able to do it all.

And AGAIN, if Clive owe the Grammy Committe then Whitney Houston, Usher and Toni Braxton should won the same amount or more than Alicia.
And you clearly saying Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Destiny's Child, Earth Wind and Fire, 2004 era Usher, Missy, Prince, Al Green, Anita Baker and the girl you stan for Aaliyah is no compeition because Alicia beat all of them at the Grammy before.
Don't get mad at my artist because they pay Aaliyah ass dust in the Grammy.
And like I say before, if Alicia did died at 22, Alicia would still have a bigger impact than Aaliyah. None of Aaliyahs albums and singles wasn't big as Songs In A Minor and Fallin'. Plus the record label would clearly release "The Diary of Alicia Keys" since she would of been done with that album before she die. And "The Diary of Alicia Keys" would of been still successful. Alicia would of left the earth with two classic
albums while Aaliyah left this earth with none.
Let talk about back in the days because we really can't talk about Aaliyah vocal now since she not with us right now but we can talk about Aaliyah and Alicia Keys prime vocal. In Alicia prime, Alicia vocal would shut Aaliyah prime vocal the F up and EVERYBODY know that. Aaliyah wasn't a vocalist at all in the first place. And not only Alicia write her own music and better at instruments, but she also a produce her music too. Alicia win.

Blind or not, Stevie AND Janet still admired Aaliyah. And it has to do with her legacy because the same people YOU worship disagree with everything you say about Aaliyah apparently.
1. Aaliyah's work have recieved great reviews by rolling stone and NME, also she made pitchfork's list several times.
2. It's all opinions by the end of the day.
3. I never said any of this. So thats here nor there.
4. lol what? Keke Palmer, Beyonce, Amerie, Kelly Rowland, Jojo, Tiffan Evans, Azelia Banks, Brandy, Dawn Richard, Utada, and countless other r & b singers cite Aaliyah as an influence. And let's not even get started on how Rappers and Indie Rock Bands alike are ALWAYS sampling her music.
5. In urban culture, it is.

Again, it was far more competition in the 80's and 90's compared to the 2000's. Like, why is this even a debate?
and I'm not saying every single grammy she won was due to Clive, sis. She deserved to win some of those fairly. You basically dragged yourself sis. The fact that Alicia has more grammies than Whitney says enough.
They paid her "dust" at the grammies simply because Aaliyah's dumb label sent her songs in for the wrong nods. For example, her label sent in Try Again for best vocals. LOL.
Aaliyah has classic albums. OIAM alone influenced a sound of r & b, while Alicia's basic @ss sh!t just borrows from REAL soul singers.
If Alicia died @ 22 with just one album you really think she would have a legacy? lord.
Amy Winehouse died with two and her legacy isn't even that strong. You sound a fcking fool. Please stop.
Aaliyah>> Alicia vocally. Nobody is here for cigarette strains.
Producing is just part of Alicia's instrumentation skills.(Which I already gave her credit for). Aaliyah slayed her in every other category though.

But Alicia still had competition. Beyonce is a huge competition since she one of Grammy fave, Mary J. Blige was still big at that time and Usher was a big competition in 2004 with his best selling R&B Album in the 00's Confessions.

You did and every single Grammy (not some) she had won was fair.

Yet you just said she sing better than Alicia but you doing the same thing I'm doing right now and that laughing at the fact that the Grammy actually nod Try Again for best vocals. And they also nod her for "Rock The Boat" in 2002 but Alicia beat her with the classic Fallin. Dead @ her last album being her only album to be nod for "Best R&B Album" and yes Alicia bet her again.

Yet One In A Million didn't win and even wasn't nod for a Grammy while Songs In A Minor and The Diary of Alicia Keys both Grammy winner. Songs In A Minor was bigger than One In A Million and Fallin' is bigger than the rest of One In A Million singles. Alicia debut is bigger than everything Aaliyah had done. Amy Winehouse is bigger than Aaliyah period. You need to stop.

Yet Aaliyah couldn't beat Alicia in 2002 for best vocals at the Grammy.
Alicia >>>>>>> Aaliyah "Ciara" like vocal.

Alicia Keys deserves a position over Beyonce and Aaliyah if this is a "RNB thing".
I would argue Janet, Alicia, and perhaps Patti
