Hold the **** on. I'm reading the Crypt Keeper's book since it finally leaked online. Why the **** is he claiming responsibility for her pop/rock sound in Miss Independent and the song itself?
He also said the Xtina was mad about her singing the song and that they never had gotten it fully cleared from her.

We were on such tight deadlines with the Idol winners that we rarely had time to even speak with them about the material we were gathering for them to record for their first albums. Kelly won Idol with “A Moment Like This,” a big, emotional ballad of the sort that became synonymous with the show. That song was released as a double–A side single, along with “Before Your Love,” another massive ballad, written by Desmond Child and Cathy Dennis. The single was released before the album and went to number one. Given the power of Kelly’s voice, however, Steve Ferrara, Keith Naftaly, and I felt that we could and must move her away from American Idol and its emphasis on melisma into more of a pop-rock direction. If it worked, such a move would provide her with an identity separate from the show, which would be vital for her in the long term. The track we picked to toughen up her sound was the appropriately titled “Miss Independence,” co-written by Rhett Lawrence, Matt Morris, and Christina Aguilera. At Keith Naftaly’s suggestion, the title was changed to “Miss Independent.” As previously mentioned, I didn’t realize that Rhett had offered the song to us for Kelly without clearing it with Christina, and though Christina had decided not to use the song, she was distinctly miffed. (The problem was exacerbated when “Miss Independent” was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, only to lose to Christina’s “Beautiful.”) Eventually, everything was resolved between Christina and Kelly, but it was really bumpy for a while. Thankful became a number-one album and sold well over 2 million copies. In addition, the album got very respectable reviews and, overall, its performance lent major credibility to the American Idol franchise.
