Some grades of Kelly's performance
TV Line (Michael Slezak is always such a stan lol)
Paying tribute to Patti Page and Carole King, the original American Idol somehow made relevant an old-fashioned country ditty, and then took glorious possession of one of the greatest pop-soul ballads ever written. Honestly, if she’d flown out of the auditorium like Superman at the end of her performance, it wouldn’t have shocked me in the least. Girl cannot be human.

With just a piano, a guitar, and her killer voice, Clarkson delivered a beautifully understated and warm performance of Patti Page’s and Carole King’s “Tennessee Waltz.” As she segued into ”(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” it was clear that Clarkson was giving it her all and taking the attendees to school. That is how it’s done.

Don't panic: Carole King is not dead! She just got a Lifetime Achievement Award, along with the great Patti Page (who did, in fact, die this year — sorry). And Kelly Clarkson is the perfect pick to pay tribute to these women. Part Hollywood earth mama like King, part sassy Southern lady like Page, she's the everywoman who can work whatever role you bring her, from Aretha Franklin’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T-demanding diva from ''(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman'' (which King wrote) to Page's lonely torch singer from ''Tennessee Waltz.'' And it's a good thing she pulled it off, too, since Clarkson now calls Tennessee home. Maybe now they'll let her stay there a little bit longer.

Irrelevant Guide
Most Natural Performer Kelly Clarkson pays tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award winners Carole King and Patti Page with an odd mash-up of Page's "Tennessee Waltz" and King's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." Clarkson's take on "Waltz" is nice, but a little implacable. But her formidable pipes do justice to the song that none other than Aretha Franklin made famous.

It would've been so much better had Clarkson sang this tribute to Patti Page and Carole King at the Presidential Inauguration instead of the anthem. Clarkson was made for this type of vocal flexing and, if you think about it, "Tennessee Waltz" and "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" are precursors to the kind of anthemic pop that she makes today. A nice, technically powerful reprieve from the relatively weak proceedings thus far.

There's only one true American Idol and it’s my girl, Kelly. Her voice accompanied by piano and a guitar is absolutely beautiful. Tackling Patti Page and Carole King! God. I had tears in my eyes. Kids, this is what pure music is. Learn from your elders. Songs like these are good for the soul and come straight from the heart.
