The scene was very different back then. It wasn't all digitally driven like it is now. People can conceivably forget about you in an instant if you're not releasing constantly like Rihanna and her team do.
Rihanna's team is smart. The Haus is a mess.
Also, yes MTN was promoted heavily, but not in the right places. She could have easily promoted on X Factor US and the AMAs, which would have brought her to a wider buying audience.
With NYE, everyone was standing to toast the New Year. No one was going to run to their computers to download a song that she gave a half-assed performance of
