I have a theory for that based on the first Tomb Raider movie. Due to the strong magnetism of that zones of the Earth, electronic machines break up / stop working properly, and that's why neither planes nor boats are allowed to go near there.

EDIT: Wait. Come to think of it, North and South Poles are precisely the zones of the Earth where there is less magnetism so the machines break up due to the high levels of radiation that are not neutralized by Earth's magnetic field. I was wrong
