Why is it selfish? Well, if you're a mother/father, by taking away your life means taking away one big part of life to your kids. Whoever has lost a parent knows how this feels, and especially if they don't die naturally but they do it themselves, and then kids live their whole life thinking: "I could've done something to help him/her."
And when people commit suicides because of lack of money... I'll never, ever get it. You're not the first person in the world to stay without money. People were in way worse situations and still kept themselves alive and their better days have come later. I hear many stories of women suicidal because their husband beats them. And they have a child. She kills herself and leaves her child alone with him. How brave is that? Just run away and ask for help. Call the police, your cousins, a friend, there MUST be someone out there.
Talking about kids' suicidal... well, mostly it's because of bullying. Kids can't stand being bullied and un-accepted so they think the only way out is suicide. I can tell you something, I've been through all that bullying hell both in my primary and high school, it lasted something less than a year but it was a total hell. I'd just listen to what people would be saying about me from behind and my eyes were full of tears and I was praying to God they stop. And being this shy and confidence-less as I am, I never had the courage to confront any of them. I did have friends who were with me but they took everything them guys said to me as a joke. I haven't. I've received laughter in the face, they'd laugh at everything I say, they'd tickle me and follow me all the way from school just to make fun of me. But guess what? I never thought about IT. Why? Because I have a beautiful and amazing family at home that means the world to me and who were always there for me but I kept this away from them. I escaped to my world, writing music, lyrics about how I feel and that helped me. I finally confronted everything and my life'd changed sooo much and now I'm quite friends with those guys who were sooo immature back at that time. I see kids can't stand that, even though some were in a tougher position, so they take away their life. By doing that they don't realize they're leaving their parents heartbroken forever, who will keep thinking the same... I could've done something to save him/her.
My point is: there is no reason to suicide. Even though it's hard to see and you think so, but there is always someone around you who will help you get through all those bad stuff. There is always a way out... Don't do it. Don't let others win. Show your teeth. Fight. Only fighters can win.
End of my "short" story...

Yes it's selfish.
The only time I consider it to not be a selfish, hurtful act is when it's for a medical reason and the family agrees. It's called Euthanasia/ Assisted Suicide... But other than that, it's really no excuse.
I know people go through stuff, but most of the time, people commit suicide as an act for attention or to purposely hurt someone.
Lets see your mom/dad/brother/sister commit suicide and see if your opinion on that matter changes.

Well I have to agree with Rossi, if it's for medical reasons...

It depends on who you leave behind. If you have kids or people who depend on you then it's extremely selfish. I'm not saying those are the only reasons but y'all get what I'm saying.
Every situation is different. Some people really are hurting, we just have to think of how others will be affected before doing something as drastic and FINAL as committing suicide.

Yes, unless you ACTUALLY have no family/friends/no one knows you exist.

I had one week to get myself together and put on a show for graduation. A few months to prepare myself for college and leaving my mom at home alone. His suicide note was for the most part, terrible. Telling me I had a good heart but then telling me I should use some of my kindness at home. He did this to my sister as well. This was his way of getting the last word.
I mean, I understand why he killed himself. He was an alcoholic, he wasn't doing anything with his life, and he was depressed. There were just other ways to fix these problems, and he go through with them. His suicide did a lot of damage. I know this is a lot of rambling, and I apologize. I still don't even know how I feel about it. It's selfish in a sense of that suicide effects a lot of people, but it's also selfish to think of myself in the situation.

There is a selfishness to it, but overall, no, it's not.

No, it's not selfish. There is pain and anger when anyone dies.

You don't know if they thought about it or not... it's not like they are still alive to ask them that question, eh?

Umm it is selfish, but until you're in that situation you can't judge

It depends. It's very broad concept and people kill themselves for different reasons. You can't just label it with one word.

It's the most selfish thing you can do. How is this even up for discussion?
