True to an extent but the superstars have more leeway. And you can say the same for pop radio too. With a few exceptions you need generic pop hits to really be successful. Taylor's an example of that as she had to employ one of the most generic and formulaic producers in pop radio in order to be successful this era. And she had to remix her songs to have success in the Fearless era. She didn't do either for Speak Now and got no where on pop.
There's more to it than just that with Taylor. She remixed for Fearless era and was fine, her songs for Speak Now weren't generic country and she was quite successful. It's probably more the country remix of her lead single, not attending country events outside of awards shows this year, not promoting the country single she has while talking up the pop songs, performing a very pop song the night she wins a country artist award, having WANEGBT dominate the country charts while 1 never having the country remix release and 2. Having no country airplay. Etc I could go on. I think country would allow Taylor to push the boundaries of the genre all she likes, they do with the other superstars, Carrie, Brad and Lady A etc, but she's not really a part of the genre right now and that's creating backlash. And that backlash hurts her on the radio. It's almost as if Katy Perry had released a country song in the middle of the teenage dream era. Country is an afterthought for her at the moment and they know it.
If she was just flirting with pop I bet it would be different, but shes having a full on affair, so you can't blame them if they're feeling a little jilted right now. Should they take it out on a perfectly country song? No. That's short sided. But at the same its a very polarizing situation for them.
I think country has been more than willing to let her be pop though. Think of it this way - Her set at the kiss jingle bell concert had SOG, IKYWT, Red, YBWM, WANEGBT and Love Story. Not Mean, or Begin Again or Ours or Sparks Fly or Our Song. That's fine, those are country songs and this was a pop concert. But do you think if she performs at CMA fest, a country concert, that she won't perform IKYWT and WANEGBT?
Idk I just think she's been a little too pop lately and people are seeing that and asking why she's even considered country and that's hurting her. Non country fans don't even know she has another single out right now but everyone and their dog knows about WANEGBT and IKYWT. :/
