It's definitely worth remembering that
a lot of people didn't like the Paparazzi video, the VMA Paparazzi performance, Bad Romance, Telephone video, Meat Dress etc. when they first appeared.
Opinions change and people forget/neglect how polarising these events were in hindsight and act like only her recent antics faced immediate negativity.
