I can see more black women hitting the top 10 next year.
I really hope Alicia Keys' Girl on Fire does it, Mariah's newest single does it, or Beyoncé's newest single

Those are the only 2 black women who have released songs in the US with 4 on the floor drum patterns. That is what is necessary to get a hit at this moment.

Yea I mean I can't think think of a show that has just black main characters.. but I mean we have to realize that in most shows that have multiple main characters, one of them is black (Private Practice, 90210, Revolution, Glee) I mean obviously I can't list all the examples but there's a lot that have at least 1 black main character
I think that the fact that there's only 2 black girls in the top 10 in the last 10 years is much more outrageous

And this is really sad I do feel like a lot of black artists (especially black women) are pigeonholed into "R&B" even if they wanna do something else. That's already been said before, but its true.
|
Even Rihanna consistently gets labeled as R&B for songs or albums that are clearly pop. It's just because she's black, not because people genuinely think the music fits into the R&B category. People see black and assume = R&B.

Nicole failed to make it as a solo artist in America, she doesn't count. Amerie got one Top 10, and she's half Asian half Black. I guess she kinda counts, but not really.
We haven't had a fully East Asian (or, more specifically, someone who looks East Asian) female that was successful. In over a decade.

The Asian thing is always going to be harder, as traditionally, America - and all aspects of American culture, including pop music - has been based on a literal black/white binary. Any other color, up until twenty years ago, was not SEEN.

When Whitney Houston released I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the black community booed her at the Soul Train Awards for "selling out". It was sad that they booed her. Mariah Carey also got this kind of treatment during her career.
|
Sister, I was there. I was also there in the 90s, when Brandy was less popular among Black folk than Aaliyah and Monica - because of her "acting white."

Also if we're including non black women of color Sabi, Nayer, Christina Aguilera, and M.I.A. have all gotten Top 10 hits this decade too. I guess those are features but the OP mentioned Janelle Monae too

Those are the two I'm referring to.
Did any of you actually read the link I posted? How Rihanna and Nicki comply directly to certain stereotypes for Black women in popular music.
Could a Black women be allowed to be as "innocent" as a Carly Rae or a Taylor Swift? That's an interesting question; I think I know the answer, and it breaks my heart.

Yes, Rihanna was up to GGGB, Whitney was, Mariah was for 4-5 years, janet was on Control, she even sung about abstinence... I don't see big problems except that black singers are not trying with the right producers/right music to fit in

They're not the only two. Somehow, they're the only two that have found success - precisely because they weren't new.

This is part of why there are few black popstars:
Quote:
Whitney Houston Critics Called Her Too White'
Whitney Houston died at the age of 48. Most articles about her death said something like, "Houston struggled with drug and alcohol problems for years ..."
But Houston also struggled with something else that black Republicans and black non-Democrats can understand: ridicule and ostracism for "selling out," or "acting white," or not being "black enough."
Ebony, the black monthly magazine, wrote about the then-27-year-old: "Black disc jockeys have chided her for 'not having soul' and being 'too white.' ... She was booed at the Soul Train Music Awards. ... It's enough to drive a good Christian girl to drink, drugs or at least to cursing. But not Whitney. Though it hurts her deeply, she handles it all with aplomb."
Did she?
After Houston's marriage to Bobby Brown, and after years of Houston's erratic behavior and rumors of drug abuse, I spoke to singer-actress Della Reese, a longtime Houston family friend. Reese and I were in the greenroom of a television studio, and we talked about Reese's career. I told her that my mother remembered having seen a young Reese at a Washington, D.C., nightclub called either "The Cave" or "The Cove."
She laughed and said, "The Cave."
We talked about then-current Whitney Houston/Bobby Brown headlines. "I have a theory about Whitney Houston," I said. "I've been called 'Uncle Tom,' and I know how that feels. I think Whitney was so hurt by being called a 'sellout' and 'acting white' — and crap like that — she wanted to change her image. What better way to do that than to marry a bad boy? And the drug abuse makes her a flawed person fighting to overcome her demons. Makes her relatable."
Reese, a close friend of Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom, said: "I know the family well. And there's a lot of truth in what you're saying." Reese gave me permission to discuss our exchange, as long as I made one thing clear. Reese said: "The human voice is very forgiving, and Whitney is working things out. And she will come back."

Who did you have in mind as the last one?
Also, men seem to have done better. There was The Far East Movement and Psy of course

I just realized this. Not counting an appearance by a dead Whitney, or Bey or Janelle's guest spots on tracks, only TWO women of color have made the top ten this entire decade. (Four if you count Jennifer Lopez and ... Demi Lovato?)
How ... did this happen?
What can be done to turn back this tide? Can it be turned back?
This is an outrage, and really depressing.

Was it a typo in the OP?? I didn't read the actual article
edit: mess I get it i'm slow

No one. I can't think of any successful Asian American female popstars, ever.
I may be forgetting someone, though.

Rihanna and Whitney weren't really marketed as "innocent" at least in the way Carly/Taylor are. You might have a point with Control era Janet.
