The top iTunes songs look very similar to the Recochoku top songs these days. So it is definitely a good indicator no matter the market shares.
iTunes' footprint in Japan has been slowly but surely growing while master ringtone sales have been on the slow decline. Mobile sales of full-length track downloads have been growing at a slower rate than iTunes. Saying something like "iTunes is irrelevant in Japan" doesn't hold as much weight as it did back in 2008.
Regardless, Sakura Nagashi is slaying on Recochoku too
OMG I'm so glad Jpopsuki.tv exists. Now I can find J-Pop sooooo much more easily now. I'm honestly getting tired of listening to AKB all the time so I'm doing a Crystal Kay marathon right now.
