Not only "Subtle Invitation". Half of Merry Christmas II You has actually a jazz/soul vibe. It was such a surprise for me, coming after her previous R&B album. I got the impression it's the type of music Mariah will explore in her late 50s and 60s. I like jazz, by the way.

Can't pick the most experimental song but it's certainly one of her two first albums. That would be my guess.

yea I'm listening to MCIIY right now, they sound so jazzy especially Charlie Brown Xmas and Xmas time is in the air again

her first and second album are not that experimental imo, the AC vibes were dominating music trend in 90s, but yes Mariah made several experimental songs in her debut album like Prisoner (there's a random rap in the last part of the song), All in Your Mind (reggae) and You Need Me (rock vibe). and as in her sophomore album If It's Over and The Wind are the most experimental songs but not really experimental compared to her previous album.

That's why I claimed there's a bigger possibility of finding an experimental song between them. But to be honest nothing is truly experimental because she ain't no alternative musician. Mainstream artists don't do experimental music. Some pop stans try it, though.
