One explanation would be to give enough time for the hype frenzy prior to the date kick in and sell tickets..

It's simple. They need more than 2 days to transport the stage since there are only 2 big stages (meant for stadiums) and since the LA leg is consisted only from stadium shows, that's the main reason why there are there gaps.
The european leg was something totally different because if you look at the tour dates there there were always some arena shows between those big stadium shows, because they needed time to transport the big stage.
And perhaps the only big gap in the LA Leg is the one between Mexico and Puerto Rico. I'm absolutetly sure they expected a lot more from Mexico, that's why there isn't a 3-days gap and a there is a 4-days gap between 1 stadium show and 1 arena show and that doesn't really count because for the arena show in Puerto Rico they're going to use a totally different stage, so the gap should be considered to be 7 days long (between Mexico and the next stadium show in Costa Rica) so there is room for at least 2 more shows in Mexico on the 27 or even 38 of October.
