Hmm, that's really interesting. Even though it's not like I listened to "History" to know the lyrical meaning of it, I had the thought that the only COADF era songs that were possibly inspired by the AL backlash were "Like It Or Not", "Fighting Spirit", and maybe "Super Pop". So the COADF era was lighter because Madonna wanted it to be lighter, unlike Bedtime Stories?

Pretty much. Now that you're mentioning it, I'm pretty sure ''Like It Or Not'' is about the backlash, I hadn't thought of that before.
Ofcourse I think the label insisted that she'd lighten up her image and that she'd get away from all the political stuff, but she also had a big part in doing that herself. The ironic part of it all is that the album smashed in Europe (where AL was big too and she had no backlash), while it didn't exactly smash the States, when in fact she really wanted to resurrect her career there. I think the underperformance of ''Confessions...'' in the US motivated her to work with more US-based producers (instead of European ones like Mirwais And Stuart Price) for ''Hard Candy''. And we all know how that turned out...
