Her singles do pretty well in the UK: Video Games, Born To Die, Blue Jeans and Blue Velvet all did well however the album has done incredibly in the UK (and Europe).

In the UK + Europe, she's an overall sucess w/ singles + albums. In the USA, the general audience just like anything produced by David Guetta or Calvin Harris or Dr. Luke.

Yes, but indie is not a sound. Indie = independent.

While the term indie is sometimes used as if it were a music genre, independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and usually create music that can be categorized into other genres.

yeah, she was on SNL and also on Letterman, but after that there was nothing. she didn't do anything to try to get her music out there and get people's attention. and most importantly, what this thread is about, she didn't do promo to get a hit single. because she does not care if she gets a #1 hit or whatever.

and why is it so important what label she's on? I mean, I don't know her exact reasons but she must have been aware that on a bigger label, she'd have more opportunities and better support to realize her vision. a small label that doesn't have a lot of connections and experience wouldn't have helped her at all.

No, the label does matter. "Indie" means independent. This represents an artist that is self-releasing material or someone that is generally underground.

Indie is not a main genre, because it doesn't describe a particular sound of music like "pop", "rock", or "soul", for example, do. Lana makes pop music and she is signed to possibly the biggest record label in the world. She is not indie. She might have a fanbase that thinks they are cool and inde/hipster because they like her, but that's not that case. She is a pop artist.

I just said she has a fanbase built off of indie-loving fans.
I do realize that a lot of non-indie fans also love her, which is good.
But the way she has applied indie aspects to her own project is what has reeled in the fans.

That was most likely a form of damage control. Had her SNL performance not been so badly received, her label would have pushed her more I believe. But I think they changed up their scheme of things / took another approach to allow the negative hype to die down. I wouldn't be surprised if her next album is pushed a bit more.

Whether you like it or not, people tag Lana as "indie" because it has become new meanings

That means literally anything aside from mainstream.
Now there's "indie pop" and "indie rock" which ARE commonly used genres.
Once again, I realize that they are meant to be used for independent artists, but people are straying from that.

An example: Dev is involved with a label called "Indie Pop" - yet she has a record deal.

All we are trying to say is that Lana's image is one of an indie star.
The fact that she has been signed to Interscope just brings an indie-like act to the public eye.

There is no particular indie sound that because it can be indie rock, indie pop, alternative etc.

The artists you mentioned are independent artist that does not determine the way their music will sound like.

Nicolas makes electronic music.

Indie means independent but it's also a sub genre. Just like pop as a sound and popular music.
