I mean, back in the 1970s and 1980s, when people couldn't pay for college, they would work and scrimp and save to pay the couple thousand a year.
Now, how the hell can a student save up $40,000 per year or even on the low end, $20,000 a year

Also that moderator was terrible!!! He let both Romney and Obama walk all over him. He also never countered Romney's vague, centrists ideas, which are not in line with the conservatives.

So ... it's bad to base a vote off the fact that Romney is homophobic and sexist (not sure about racist)?

That is a CNN poll. They typically outpoll democrats by 3-6 points.
You tried hun, but tonight this election has changed. Romney has taken the lead.

Either way, I'm not a Romney fan, so i don't know what he has said on the matter, but it's highly unlikely that any government could take away financial aid to something as important as education.
The answer isn't government funding in either case because college costs are running rampant and crazy. College has officially become a business, where its presidents are paid millions of dollars a year (more than the actual president of the United States, mind you) and most of your tuition money goes into administration and pretty buildings.
|
For some people (myself included), Pell grants are the difference between being able to go to college and not being able to go to college. To get rid of Pell grants would basically be telling aspiring college students who do not have wealthy parents, "Hope you like that high school education, kid, because that's about as far as you're getting!" Just because it's unlikely does not mean it can't happen.
You're absolutely right about the fact that college costs are outrageous, though, and that the money from tuition doesn't go where it NEEDS to go (primarily, you know, the actual EDUCATION part of school). I've been to three colleges so far. One was a community college, one was a normal-sized college, and one was a state college. The cost of tuition to the community college, as of this school year? $140 per credit hour. So, if you go to four classes a semester, that's $1600 per semester. Not too bad. Now, the state university? Almost FIVE GRAND, just for residents. PER SEMESTER. That's nothing compared to Stanford, though, where it costs you close to $14,000 per SEMESTER. I mean, holy crap.

How is that ignorant? I don't want to support a man who won't allow one of my best friends to marry whomever they want to. And I want females to get equal pay as their male co-workers

It's ignorant because you don't share the same views as him.

I'm not voting for a candidate just because they can deliver lies and try to sell them.
Romney is a businessman, not a leader. This debate was a business tactic. He was so scripted. He was dying to get those middle class stories out there to fix the percentage of people he alienated a couple weeks ago. He did not go into depth about how he would fix the country. Just more lies and flip flopping to different sides. Not here for that.

Do you know these polls that show Obama up 10 or 9 in Florida and Ohio outpoll democrats by 9 to 11 points? Lol girl. This election was tied up before tonight, now it has given Romney the edge. And there are 2 more debates. This election has finally changed, and the Republicans are LOADING the airwaves with ads this month. Its over.

I went to Vanderbilt (a private university). Tuition was $20,000 per semester. Total cost of attendance was about $55,000 PER YEAR.

Can someone give a summary of what each said, or basically who came out better from it?

i agree that pell grants are great, but I don't think they're enough. And if there is an alternative solution (like enforcing a cap on state college education or doing a dollar-for-dollar matching program with states) that would render the Pell Grants moot, I think the idea should at least be entertained. I just don't like complacency because times change, and new solutions need to be thought up to tackle new problems, instead of going by something that was helpful when college cost at most $15,000 a year.
it's a damn shame about college costs because people are still having a hard time getting jobs. And if anything, no president is truly going to bring the economy roaring back. In the 1990s, we benefited from tech's explosion, but since then, other countries have caught up, and their infrastructure has, in many ways, surpassed our own. We aren't the only country with the great infrastructure conducive to breakthroughs. In fact, in so many areas, we're lagging. So dropping all those thousands and hundreds of thousands on a college education that might not repay itself...idk. I just think there must be a bigger picture solution.
