There's no doubt they were invited, they just didn't come.
Last year was an AMAZING show. Beyoncé, Breezy, Weezy, Yeezy, Jay, GaGa, Brit Vanguard, Adele, & Amy Winehouse Tribute.
This year, they had Taylor, Rihanna, P!nk, 2Chainz, Alicia, Weezy, 1D, GreenDay & Frank Ocean.

Viewership was bound to take a dip. Plus it was a Thursday Night. When I asked my friends if they saw it, all of them didn't even know it was on
It's not about the fact that it wasn't promoted, it just wasn't promoted that heavily outside of MTV like last years.
