It seems pretty obvious that was part of (probably the biggest) motivation behind doing it, but I don't think it's selling out if the artist doesn't regret making that kind of music or dislike it at all. I really think besides becoming more popular she really wanted to try electronic music. She has always loved Britney and Madonna, and her goal in her career is to be a big pop star. If that's what you want then it's only natural to make music like on Electra Heart.
People act like her first album was completely indie and "hipster". Listen to Oh No! and Shampain. The album is full of pure pop songs. and Electra Heart has some quirky TFJ type songs.
