Sade, Amy and Florence making it so high (they deserved higher) I'm surprised atrl is here for them like this, the order should've been switched though. Predictable top 5, it'll be Xtina or Aretha out first, Whitney will probably win, if it's Beyonce . Damn, I really should vote on these things more often.
Ugh Florence. Her voice and music are like the stuff of nightmares for me. I can see the appeal though.
And WOW at that Kelly performance. She absolutely killed it, how have I not seen this before? I loved Carrie's version but damn, this is SO much better.
There is a part of me that wishes Kelly would just become a cover artist though. Having two or three great tracks per album (for her last three albums) is just a shame. That voice is meant for so much more.
It's only fitting that we start tonight off with two legends of soul music.
One could make the case that Al Green defined soul music in the 70s. It's a strong case to be made, as arguably no one combined the secular and the sacred quite like Al. A voice as silken smooth as bedsheets, with a fire in his belly - and his loins. A masterclass in emotion, Al has inspired virtually every male - and female - who have entered the genre thereafter.
But Amy Winehouse said it best - "Donny couldn't contain himself. He had something in him, you know?" A voice gone way too soon, Donny is, without question, my favorite male vocalist of all time. I believe every word he sings, and his actual voice is without compare.
Balk if you want - he doesn't exactly fit with who's come before, and who's to come later - but try to imagine the last twenty years of rock and roll without this man's voice.
You can't. It's not possible. It gets used a lot, but Kurt was the voice of his generation; no wonder he had so many copycats. Folksy at the start, with pain jutting in like shards of shattered glass. Touching stuff.
