Rihanna's riskiest lead single was Russian Roulette, i mean some may say it wasn't successful but it still became a top 10 hit for her and set the tone for Rated R so I would say it did work.

Honestly the bridge went under the radar and the song was spesifically crafted to exploit LGBT community for commercial succes; therefore it's automatically a safe bet designed for the certain demographic who is basically responsible for Pop's existence. It's not risky by any means.

HIAM was a little unusual at the time of release. BTW, Rolling in the Deep (unintentionally), and Russian Roulette all come to mind, though I'm not sure some people would consider RR a "success".

I think the most risky part of that song is its blatant similarity with madonnas "express yourself" and people instataneously linking them together. If that's what u mean than yes it was risky releasing it.

Anyway, I think a risky single that worked was Madonna's Hung Up. It was a disco-inspired/sampling dance pop track in 2005 where the mainstream was largely hip hop/rnb, and it did very well despite that.

Nope, it was not risky considering that there were self empowerment songs released during that time.

A risky single is something that deviates from what the artist is usually releasing.

Example: Ain't no other Man by Xtina - she released a throwback album with a single not sure if it will be embraced by the public considering that time hiphop and rnb infused pop songs dominating the scene.

Slave 4 u - Britney. from bubblegum pop to a seductive siren., it was risky considering that she portrayed a virginal image.

Erotica - Madonna , more sexual and more rnb than Madonna's previous releases.
