CIL was a little risky. Who really was using Rich Harrison as a producer with his horns at that time ? That horn sample was very unique. Rich Harrison's entire sound during that time was different from what was on pop/urban radio at the time.

Uhh IIWAB is a complete, 100% rehash of Big Girls Don't Cry. Beyonce made that **** to get a huge Pop/Hot AC hit like Fergie did. Everything about that era was so generic, contrived, and calculated.

None of the big pop girls have ever put out a risky lead single. Not Britney, not Beyonce, not Rihana, not Katy or Gaga.

Right. Both Rich and Bey have said people passed on the song and he just kept it locked away for like 2 or so years, and no one wanted the song but when he played it for Bey she loved it and it just sort of worked it's way into pop music.

Hmmm, maybe Kelis' 'Bossy' was kind of risky. The songw as very urban - even for her. The song was made for US radio, but wasn't very UK/EU radio friendly. Yet it was a minor hit. I also feel like the single has put her back on the map, in the US. (it wa sher first hit since 'Milkshake').

People, they are signed to MAJOR LABELS. 99% of the songs they release as singles are market-tested within an inch of their lives, especially in this age of a collapsing music industry.

This is actually a really interesting topic for discussion, but not when everyone responds with absolutely no thought. The only legitimate suggestions I've seen so far are probably "Live to Tell" and "Justify My Love."

Justin Timberlake's 'SexyBack' was risky. Going from urban to dance. I remember how the song was dragged when it first was released in the time dance/pop was at a low point, especially in the US.
