As predicted this week, the fight for No. 1 on next week's Hot 100 could be fierce, with previous Hot 100 residents Maroon 5, Katy Perry and perhaps Flo Rida pushing for the top position and dethroning Jepsen.
Or, another newcomer could break through and make it four straight No. 1s by artists in their maiden Hot 100 visits: Ellie Goulding's "Lights'" is up to No. 4, fueled by a 4-1 blast on the On-Demand Songs chart

They're just teasing at the idea of another "new" act getting their first No. 1. "Lights" isn't selling anything compared to Flo/Katy.

maybe "Lights" and "Whistle" have exploded in onDemand streams, which is why they probably said they could have a chance in snatching the #1.

No, they don't typically. The leaders were Scheisse, Marry The Night, Heavy Metal Lover, and Government Hooker, if I recall.

And you don't think those would have done well if released at the proper time? It's not that she didn't have good options, the problem was that she released Judas right next to a religious holiday, rushed a third single that did not fit with the sound of either of the first two, and then released a country-rock ballad. Any of those four you mentioned would have done well if the era was handled properly.

Yeah, I agree, it'll obviously be Carly.
I remember 3 or 4 weeks ago Billboard said it's a battle for #1 between Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Carly, and now they're STILL saying it lol.

The Billboard Hot 100 is becoming slow again in terms of #1s like it was from 2002-2005.
We Are Young: 6 weeks
Somebody That I Used To Know: 8 weeks
Call Me Maybe: 7 weeks:
Right there 21 weeks these massive hits ruling (Billboard said since 2002 three singles in a row didn't notch 6 weeks at #1 one after another) and only 8 #1s so far if you count "We Found Love". At this rate this decade will have less #1s than 2000's lol
|
I think we'll get less #1s than during the 00's for this decade for sure. The 00's had a few years (2006-2008) where the #1 spot was always changing frequently, but we haven't had a time like that this decade (apart from the last 3 months of 2010).

Fan chosen singles don't tend to do well, because often enough, fan favorites don't match up to what the general public will enjoy. One of the reasons that Billboard listed as a possibility as to why Marry The Night bombed is that it lacked a melodic hook, which is the case for all four of those listed.
The only songs that really fit the bill were Born This Way, which is infamous for its Madonna comparisons; The Edge of Glory, which had a rather shameful video attached to it; Yoü and I, whose instrumental production was a sonic mess; and Hair, which is loathed by the fans for being too cheesy and cliche. Also, Highway Unicorn and Fashion Of His Love, which had no chance of ever being released.
That being said, Hair had the most potential out of anything left, despite how hated it is.
The era was a hot mess though. So it performed a lot better than it had the right too, given how badly it was handled.

I think part of the reason her fans were so nasty about Hair was because they thought it would flop because it was a promo single, so really didn't want it to be released.
I also think Black Jesus was very catchy.

Personally, I think she should have released Electric Chapel. Or does that lack a catchy melody too?

Oh no, they hate the song itself, for its overall message, which some felt would be overdoing what the purpose of the lead single was.
They drag it in Base constantly, along with Bad Kids and The Queen.
Thing about Black Jesus is that it would apparently draw further comparisons to Madonna? Not familiar with most of Madonna's discography so I couldn't say for sure.
