That album was made/marketed to appeal to the widest possible market: everyone, everywhere.

Just about every album ever made is made and marketed to appeal to the masses. That's the entire goal of the music industry and musicians the world over. The difference between someone like Adele and other successful artists is that Adele's success was not something that came out of mass marketing. It came organically. RITD was not meant to be a #1 single.
21 was not meant to be the SUPER MEGA SMASH that it became. Both were always going to be successful, but I doubt that Adele and her team really expected anything more than a repeat of her success with
19 and "Chasing Pavements", not the dominant success that would come with
21 and "Rolling in the Deep" and the singles that followed.
By the way, I'm not even the one who made the original statement about intention, so I'm not sure why you're singling me out for it. You did give me another excuse to defend Adele as a top pop star, though, so thanks?
