The fact that Amon appears to be Bloodbending in the Finale Preview leads me to believe that he's not just taking bending powers away he's making them his own.

Sokka (probably) just died from old age and Aang died early because he was frozen in a ball of ice for 100 years.

And Katara is still alive, as far as I know.

I have decided that Amon has the spirit's divine intervention. Why are the spirits so upset with the benders? Well here's why.

Last season Aang would always say how the spirits got angry when the people around the town disturbed the environment's natural balance, like burning down the forest for instance. Now since Republic City is mostly technology and hardly any nature remains in the environment, the spirits are really upset so they sent Amon to come and energybend all their bending away.

And that is why he is basically untouchable.

The views for LOK have been higher than the first 2 seasons of Avatar, but not the third.

wait a minute!!! Look at the finale commercial again. Why does it look like Amon bloodbends Korra and Mako!!!

The only theories I can think of for Korra and Mako in that Amon scene is:
1. Amon absorbs bending after he takes it away
2. Chi blockers came in which is why Mako is sitting flat on his face
3. Katara broke through the windows and decided to join Amon's equalist army and blood bended Mako to the ground.

A lot of people on the forum agree that Amon is a spirit in body form. That is why he was able to resist the bloodbending.
Some other theories

Amon is Koh, The Face Stealer.

- Amon(Koh) is a spirit because Tarrlok said "what are you?"
- A spirit is presumably resistant to bloodbending.
- Amon(Koh) wears a mask because he has many faces.
- Koh(Amon) has a grudge against Avatar Kuruk, which may have spread to all benders/ future avatars.

- Koh said to Aang: "We'll meet again" ! Korra is Aang's reincarnation.

- Koh is one of the oldest spirits - almost as old as the Ocean and Moon spirits. He was able to remember them crossing into the physical world (knowledge he has used to become Amon).

What if by taking away someone's bending Amon is actually absorbing that person's cosmic energy?
Taking away the bending he places his thumb on the forehead which is the Though Chakra, which contains "pure cosmic energy". It is the same energy that Avatar is pumped up when his eyes flash - and we already know Aang resisted Yakone's bloodbending only by going full avatar.
So maybe Amon actually absorbs this energy from regular benders and that's how he can (almost) completely resist bloodbening.

He's a freak.

That's why the writers had Sokka go on that extended speech about how Yakone's impossible bloodbending could exist. It's setting up the information in the viewer's mind to understand in the finale that Amon isn't an Avatar-style energybender. He's just a freak like Combustion Man or Yakone/Tarrlok. Unlike someone like Toph, whose blindness allowed her the insight to develop a teachable skill (metalbending), Amon's uber chi-blocking is somehow rooted in his biology. He's a Combustion Man, only instead of blowing up stuff with his mind he can disable people's bending. His biology/chi is different enough from the human norm that Tarrlok's bloodbending could only partially affect him; maybe the abnormality that gave his uber chi-blocking also makes him partially resistant to bloodbending.

It could be that he is being controlled by a spirit. Spirits have no blood, hence Amon was able to walk through it. (Of course with Amon having a body, he himself will have blood, which is why it affected him slightly) We definitely know Amon has a spiritual property about him, being able to take other's bending away. Yet, is Amon himself being controlled by a spirit? That would be a deep theme for this show.
