There are many different kinds of rappers who have their own audience. They can be very "weird" and still have a big following. Look at Tyler the Creator. He's not very "common" and he still has an audience.
Azealia just needed more popularity. A few features on some hip hop tracks and she would of been fine. Even if it was a hip-house beat all u really need is a few co-signs and ur set. That's part of the way Nicki gained her massive audience. The more noticeable she became, the more people were interested in who she was, and what she did.
It did well though UK wise...it went from internet hype and charted low down because of that and then became a top 20 hit. It's a club fave, I hear it everywhere. However, Nicki has Capital in the UK, they literally made Starships big. Azealia only has radio 1 and 1xtra.
