I always see comments on here saying "omg why did he/she release that song as a single? It's not lead single material". What does lead single material mean? Educate me
It has to be a strong, hard hitting song that will be memorable. Umbrella and We Found Love are perfect examples, while lead singles like Not Myself Tonight and Work Bitch are weaker ones.
When someone speaks about a song not being "lead single material", they're saying that they don't think a song is strong enough to spearhead an album's promotional campaign.
AKA - this song isn't going to have the impact needed to get people interested in buying the album.
It is usually very catchy, can appeal to mass amounts of people, innovative or top tier, usually very loud and serves the purpose to showcase the true meaning of the artist.
A standout track. A good example is Beyonces Dangerously In Love album. CIL is lead single material, its exciting, hard hitting, memorable, catchy and a standout. How do you think things would of gone if she had released the title track as the lead?

and half the time that doesn't work even with the hit single and the album still flops.
