I always see comments on here saying "omg why did he/she release that song as a single? It's not lead single material". What does lead single material mean? Educate me

It has to be a strong, hard hitting song that will be memorable. Umbrella and We Found Love are perfect examples, while lead singles like Not Myself Tonight and Work Bitch are weaker ones.

AKA - this song isn't going to have the impact needed to get people interested in buying the album.

A lead single needs to have the artist's stamp on it. Incredibly generic lead singles that could have been made by anyone rarely do well.

It is usually very catchy, can appeal to mass amounts of people, innovative or top tier, usually very loud and serves the purpose to showcase the true meaning of the artist.

and half the time that doesn't work even with the hit single and the album still flops.
