Max Martin top 3 in songwriting/producing #1s on Hot 100
Ask Billboard: Max Martin Notches Another No. 1
Quote:
With "Space" marking Martin's 19th No. 1 as a writer, he remains in third place among writers with the most toppers in the Hot 100's 56-year history. He ranks behind only Paul McCartney, with 32, and John Lennon (26). With "Shake," Martin broke past Mariah Carey (17) for sole possession of the third-most leaders among writers.
Martin also co-produced "Space," which grants him more honors in that field, as well. Martin tallies his 17th No. 1 as a producer, lifting him into sole ownership of the second-most No. 1s among producers in Hot 100 history. He passes Jimmy Jam, Dr. Luke and Terry Lewis, each with 16. The producer with the most No. 1s? George Martin (23). Martin produced 19 of the Beatles' 20 No. 1s, the most leaders among artists.

Um I was clearly talking about the gap between 2000 and 2008 between the n sync hit and I kissed a girl you can clearly tell he was doing " alright" and then everything after I kissed a girl was MASSIVE why are you low key trying to discredit I kissed a girl and the clear impact it has had on making him one of the most requested and successfull songwriters ever?
P.s: I'm not even a Katy Stan or semi fan..I do bop to ET , Circle the drain and Legendary Lovers tho

Because it never did such thing. Max Martin was more than fine before IKAG. Some of his early singles never saw a physical release or only saw limited physical release because it was normal to push albums instead. With iTunes things have changed, now everyone releases their singles.
For example:
Britney´s Oops!... I Did It Again peaked at #9 mostly based on radio, because it only got a limited physical release. The album is Diamond
Britney´s "Britney" album had flop singles because she was blacklisted on radio and still refused to give them a physical release. The album is nearly 5x Platinum
It was a normal thing to push albums instead, its not that the singles were flopping or that his career needed any saving

If anything, it was Kelly Clarkson who made him hot in the new era.
But, as it was stated already, he was always a hot writer/producer. His songs were proper hits even if Billboard wasn't able to properly reflect that. I mean, "I Want It That Way" is probably the Top 3 biggest song on that long list, but it only peaked at #6. Similar situation with Oops, which peaked at #9.
